drowning my cares

white bathtub

This is where I go to forget. And feel better. And rest. And restore myself. And feel born again.

Also: Clean.

Out of all the things in my life right now – all the things I love – my tub is my best friend, and the only thing that truly seems to calm me.

What calms you?

kitchen towel

kitchen hand towel

The above photo was taken early in the morning while I was preparing my breakfast and lunch. I lay on my kitchen floor beside my refrigerator to take it. This is the towel (rag, really) that I use to wipe my hands while I’m working in the kitchen. I change it every day for a clean one. It hangs from a hook with a clip – the kind you’d use in your laundry room, to hang a small item to dry.

dark bedroom

The day didn’t end well. I woke up with a migraine which got progressively worse as the morning went on. I left a community meeting partway through the noon hour, afraid I was going to vomit. (I did, later in the afternoon. Twice.) Spent the rest of the day in my bed, sick as a dog. When I have a day like this, where I don’t feel well, I get really down. Enough said.

cat photo shoot

cat on upholstered chair

I’ve been taking lots of photos of the guys since the “incident”, just in case they’re not with me much longer. Above is Guy on the upholstered rocker in my back room.

Above and below are Guy in my bedroom.

(Added later) Finally, this is Tear on my desk, hanging out with me and my work laptop on Monday as I work from home, in order to keep an eye on the critters.

olympic trials

white laundry

The setup: I have two cats. We’re in the middle of a heatwave right now.

The status update from two days ago: Aaaand in the lightweight male neutered category is Guy Goodfellow with his first attempt at a hairball on upholstered furniture or bed. While his choice of white sheets will add to his score, I’m afraid that the poor hairball formation, combined with too much stomach fluid, may hurt Team Emelgy’s chances at a medal…

The result: Enforced laundry while suffering from a migraine.

comfort – temperature control

white fan on hardwood floor

Last week it was unseasonably hot in my area of the world. I ended up breaking out my summer fans months earlier than normal. This is a photo of one of my cats playing with the plastic bags that I cover the fans with when they’re in storage.

I appreciate temperature control.

(And yes, immediately after I took this photograph, I removed cat from bag and bag from room.)

comfort – cooling off my rooms

bookshelves and blue dressers

On Thursday night (after the outdoor daytime temperature went above 20C (68F), and the indoor temperature in my apartment got above 27C (80F), I visually “cooled” my room by putting away any clutter. In the summer, when it can get over 37C (100F), I get super minimalistic with my interior decorating, and try to stick with as much white as possible.

I appreciate spareness.

comfort – white bed linens

embroidered white cotton pillow case

I’m using these embroidered pillow cases on my bed right now. My mom gave them to me several months ago. They had been stored in my grandmother’s cedar chest for years, like new, never used.

I appreciate white cotton bed linens.

Have you ever slept in a bed with hand-embroidered pillow cases, trimmed with hand-tatted lace?

Do you have special treasures packed away, unused? Why don’t you use them – enjoy them now?
